We invite you to discover the main trails you can enjoy during your visit to San Pedro de Atacama:
La Duna Trail: This is a 2-hour hike. It is an informal trail that extends from the road that crosses the Valle de La Luna (Moon Valley) to the sand-covered hill. Visitors are requested not to enter in vehicles to the base of the dune and to use the existing pedestrian path. Throughout the tour, you can observe unique geological formations and the forms of erosion that give the valley its name. It is recommended to bring plenty of fluids and sunscreen.
Valle de La Luna Trail: 8 to 12 kilometers long and about 4 hours of hiking. The trail can be hiked parallel to the road that crosses the Valle de la Luna, this allows to observe the beauty of the landscape and the forms of erosion derived from a more humid climate than the current one. It is recommended to protect yourself from the wind, take plenty of fluids and sunscreen.
Salar de Tara Trail: This trail allows you to walk along the northern edge of the Tara salt flat to the vicinity of the mouth of the Zapalen River, it has an extension of 8 to 10 kilometers. It allows to observe erosion forms of great beauty, along with wildlife (flamingos and vicuñas). The tour leads across a plain that is at 4,300 m. of altitude. Due to the lack of oxygen, visitors should walk slowly and wear warm clothes (high mountain). In summer, the tour should be done in the early hours of the morning because afternoon thunderstorms with electrical discharges can occur.
Miscanti and Miñiques Lagoons Trail: This trail has an extension of 8 to 12 kilometers, which can be covered in 3 or 4 hours. It allows to explore the edge of the Miscanti and Miñiques lagoons, observing the mountain range relief (volcanoes) and the avifauna (tagua cornuda, Andean gull, caiti, blanquillo and flamingos mainly). Difficulty level: The lagoons are at 4,300 m altitude and the decrease of oxygen in the environment forces the visitor to walk slowly. You should always wear warm clothes (high mountain). In summer, it is advisable that the tour is made in the early hours of the morning until 12:00 or 13:00 hours, because then there may be thunderstorms.
Soncor Trail: This trail has an extension of 4 to 5 kilometers and lasts about 3 hours. The visitor can walk along the San Luis bridge and surroundings, observing the lagoons and the fauna, where the Andean, Chilean and James's flamingos, Baird's sandpiper, the Andean coati and the Andean gull, among others, stand out. It is very important that visitors protect themselves from the high sun radiation and bring plenty of fluids.
