At 3,500 meters above sea level and not too far from San Pedro de Atacama lies the Arcoiris Valley ("Rainbow Valley").
The Arcoiris Valley is located in the basin of the Grande River, about 90 kms from San Pedro de Atacama. The valley, like the rest of the attractions of San Pedro de Ataca and surroundings, is well above 3000 meters above sea level.
The buildings of Rio Grande, are characterized by being built in stone, with thatched roofs and mud. They are also characterized by algarrobo wood beams and sometimes cactus wood, although it is currently forbidden to use this wood because it is in a vulnerable state. In Hierbas Buenas, you can see petroglyphs drawn on the rock walls.
Strange formations and colors can be seen in the Rainbow Valley. The Valley of the rainbow owes its name to the great variety of tonalities that can be observed in the hills of the valley; earth colors, reddish, beige, green, white, yellow, combined with the white salts and the blue sky, besides being combined in strange formations. The colors show the great richness and different concentrations of clay, salts, and minerals.
On the other hand, there are also interesting rock formations here as a result of erosion.
