Tatio Geysers
The name Tatio in the indigenous Aymara language means “the crying grandfather”. This incredible geothermic site is located at 4.321m over sea level in the middle of the Andes Cordillera and therefore is the highest geothermic field of the world.
The sector is surrounded by big and beautiful mountains and volcanoes reaching up to 5.900m over sea level. On the way to the geysers, it is possible to see Bofedales (typical wetland) and little indigenous villages. A geyser can be found where subterranean waters get heated up by volcanic magma and shoot out of the surface together with a lot of steam. They are produced by the high temperatures in the watery craters and offer a unique spectacle at 4.300m in the Chilean desert.
Very early in the morning the Tatio wakes up. Hundreds of visitors are attracted by its geothermic activity during the year and come to experience an incredible morning. With the first shafts of sunlight, the white steam columns present an amazing miracle of nature in the Andes Cordillera.
