Amazing Tour of Northern Chile & Altiplano - March 2025
Mayuru/Gabriel organized a phenomenal, customized tour of northern Chile for me. We worked together for a few months to refine the trip and accommodations in a way that fitted my budget and timeline, and Gabriel maintained close contact before and during the trip to confirm that everything was going according to plan - which it did! My tour guide Manuel was knowledgeable and fun (and an excellent driver on the secondary roads). The itinerary (Putre, Chungara, Surire, Suriplaza.....) was incredible - the scenery, wildlife and whole experience was unforgettable. Gabriel also worked with his partners in Bolivia to seamlessly hand-off my tour to them, as it extended into Lap Paz, Copacabana, Uyuni and the south. His strong relationship with those partners took the worry out of my trip. I would strongly recommend using Mayuru Tour as what they offer is really special!
Fascinating tour through the Altiplano.
We took the tour "Atacama Chile - Highland Lagoons - Bolivia - Uyuni Salt Flats - Surire Salt Flats - Lauca National Parc". Everything was very well organized and went smoothly. The accommodations were all very good, according to their standard. In the Atacama Desert, the tours were in small groups with very good and friendly English-speaking guides. During the following six-day trip through Bolivia and Northern Chile, we travelled alone with 2 drivers. We always felt safe and very well looked after. Spontaneous photo stops were never a problem. Communication was always fine despite our basic Spanish skills. With Manuel we could use a mix of Spanish, French and English. He is truly a passionate driver/guide and we had a lot of fun together. Over all, it was a very impressive and amazing trip through the Altiplano that we can highly recommend! If it weren't so far away, we would do it again.
Transfer from Calama airport to San Pedro de Atacama.
IMPORTANT: You must arrive in Calama no later than 12.00 hrs. in order to be on time for the afternoon excursion.
IN THE AFTERNOON: VALLE DE LA LUNA (MOON VALLEY).
Pick up at your hotel between 15.00 and 15.40 hrs.
We leave San Pedro de Atacama to visit the Cordillera de la Sal, and the Valley of the Moon, named after the Jesuit priest Gustavo Le Paige who travelled through this area in his archaeological explorations before the development of tourism. Visiting the dunes and valleys it is possible to observe the "lunar" characteristics that led the priest to name it this way. Visit to the Three Marias, the Great Dune and the Amphitheatre, the main attractions of the Valley of the Moon.
Return to San Pedro de Atacama at approximately 20.30 hrs.
Included:
Pick up between 07.00 and 7.40 a.m. From San Pedro de Atacama we leave early in the morning, heading to the south of the oasis, we continue through the basin of the Great Salar de Atacama, and we go to the National Reserve of the Flamingos Soncor sector (Laguna Chaxa), where we will visit a reproduction and nesting area (spring - summer) of these pink birds living in Chile.
Then we continue through the Cordillera de Los Andes towards the Puna. During the trip it is possible to observe the numerous volcanoes of almost 6.000 m.a.s.l. like the Simba or Aguas Calientes (5.930 m.a.s.l.), the Pili or Acamarachi (6.050 m.a.s.l.) and the active Lascar. Their summits join us until we reach the Altiplanic Lagoons, Miscanti and Meñiques.
From the lagoons we continue to the Salar de Talar, where we will visit the amazing rock formations known as "Piedras Rojas". The views of the salt flat are breathtaking. From here we return to San Pedro. During the journey we reach an altitude of approximately 4.200 m.a.s.l.
Return to San Pedro de Atacama at around 17.45 hrs.
Included:
Pick up from the hotel between 4.30 and 5.10 am. Departure in a north-easterly direction, towards the Andes, along a winding road with varied altiplanic landscapes. The whole trip of approximately 90 km is a real safari, which allows us to observe native birds and mammals, which inhabits the wetlands and streams that cross along the way until we reach the geothermal field of the Tatio Geysers.
Located more than 4,500 metres above sea level, surrounded by the Andes in a ghostly atmosphere, the Tatio Geysers offer an impressive spectacle every day at sunrise. Most of the time it is possible to see, thanks to the temperature differences, the steam vents and water jets that emerge like columns in this surreal phenomenon.
During the return trip there are several stops to observe the wetlands and wildlife sighting areas.
Return to San Pedro de Atacama at around 11.30 hrs
IN THE AFTERNOON: Cejar Pond, Ojos del Salar and Tebenquiche lagoon.
Pick up from the hotel between 14.00 and 14.40 hrs.
From San Pedro we head towards the south of San Pedro, going into the Atacama Salt Flat, towards the different lagoons that emerge. We visit Laguna Cejar and Laguna de Piedra, where it will be possible to swim and float without much effort in its salty waters (time to use dressing rooms and rinse the salty water).
We continue our trip through the basin of the Salar de Atacama, now we visit the Ojos del Salar, fresh water pools of great depth located in the middle of nowhere. The excursion ends at the Tebinquiche Lagoon, where it is possible to appreciate a wide view over the Andes Mountain Range and the Salt Mountain range. The sunsets are impressive, especially when reflected in the waters of the lagoon, the strange and whimsical shapes and colors of the sky and sunset. It is worth a tour of this unique landscape of northern Chile. Return to San Pedro de Atacama at around 20.30 hrs.
